On 25/10/2019, Google announced it was bringing the BERT model into Search, describing it as one of the biggest leaps forward for the engine in years. The goal is to better understand longer, conversational queries. For website owners, this doesn't mean "optimizing for BERT", but writing clear content that matches the reader's intent.
What is BERT, and what changed?
According to Pandu Nayak's announcement, BERT is a natural language processing technique based on neural networks. The difference is that the model considers each word in relation to the whole sentence, rather than one word at a time. As a result, small words like "to" and "for" are also counted in the meaning of a query.
A few points to remember from the announcement:
- At launch, BERT helped Google better understand about 1 in 10 English queries in the US.
- Google said it would expand to other languages and regions over time.
- A BERT model was also used to improve featured snippets in about two dozen countries.
The announcement gave no specific guidance for content creators. So the suggestions below are based on the general principles of helpful content that Google publishes on its webmaster pages.
Content writing tips
1. Write for readers, in natural language. Users increasingly type full questions as if speaking. Write coherent, grammatical sentences instead of stuffing in disconnected keywords.
2. Answer the main question directly. Put a short answer right at the start of the section, then explain in detail below. This is good for readers and more likely to appear as a featured snippet.
3. Pay attention to connecting words and prepositions. Small words can change the meaning of a whole sentence, for example "tickets from Hanoi to Da Nang" differs from "tickets from Da Nang to Hanoi". Be clear about direction, audience and conditions.
4. One main intent per page. Identify what the reader wants: to learn, compare or buy. The content should go straight to that intent and avoid rambling.
5. Use clear headings and structure. Divide sections with headings that describe the content, and use lists and tables where suitable. A Frequently Asked Questions section helps answer question-style queries.
6. Add context. State the time, place, audience and applicable conditions. The more specific the query, the more specific the content needs to be.
What not to do
- Don't stuff keywords or force repeated phrases into the text.
- Don't write content just to fill space for keywords without real information.
- Don't trust claims like "optimize for BERT with one trick", because Google has published no such method.
Check your article
After writing, ask yourself: would someone who knows nothing about this topic understand and be able to do what they need after reading? Read the article aloud; fix any sentence that sounds awkward. Track real queries in Google Search Console to see what users actually search for, then fill in what's missing.
2026 update: Since 2019, Google Search has changed a lot and expanded support for many more languages. The principle of helpful, trustworthy, people-first content is still emphasized by Google in its webmaster documentation; see the current guidance pages.
