Cộng đồng: những việc tử tế HVSC cùng làm

Sharing through what we do best: teaching technology to grandparents, contributing books for readers, building free digital tools.

Chapter 01

Why is a company named "Học viện Sẻ chia"?

Callers to HVSC occasionally ask about the opening of classes, and parents ask about tuition. HVSC is not a school. It is a business in airfare, technology and digital marketing, with the legal name Học viện Sẻ Chia International Co., Ltd (HVSC). But the name wasn't chosen for fun.

Before there was a company, founder Khoa Nguyễn and the young friends around him had been doing community work for years: volunteering with social organizations since 2008, campaigning for civilized bus riding, donating books for readers, teaching grandparents to use phones. When the small technology and communications groups merged into one brand on September 9, 2016, the words "Sẻ chia" (sharing) stayed in the name as a reminder: however good you are at your trade, part of it must be brought out to the community.

"Học viện" (academy) is where people learn from each other. "Sẻ chia" is the part that takes what was learned out into the world. This page records that second part: who does it, since when, how, and what the press has written. Where there are no records, we leave it blank rather than filling in numbers to look good.

To live is to give, with no need for anything in return, ready to love and share together.

Chapter 03

Technology Classes and the Seniors' Internet Group

HVSC's most regular and longest-running activity. From a proposal to open another class to a group of older learners who have met together for many years.

It started with a computer class

In 2015, when smartphones were already in most older people's pockets, Khoa Nguyễn proposed a smartphone class, wrote the curriculum himself and taught it in person.

What he saw in class was simple: many grandparents had new phones but used them only for calls. They wanted to see faces of faraway children and grandchildren, wanted to send a photo, but hesitated to ask for fear of being a bother. And the people least familiar with phones were the ones most likely to click on strange links.

After finishing, the learners didn't want to disband. They formed the Seniors' Internet Group, kept a meeting on the first Monday of each month, celebrated each other's birthdays, learned more about security and scam prevention, then invited each other on trips.

From 2015 to today, the Senior Internet Group has run continuously for over 11 years, and continues.

What the class covers

Content is chosen by what older learners really need to do every day, not by a list of phone features.

  • Getting to know your own phoneAdjust text size, brightness and volume; charge the battery properly; find an app you just opened.
  • Staying in touch with childrenUse Zalo, Facebook and email; make video calls, send voice messages and photos to the whole family.
  • Spotting scamsTell fake news from real, recognize impersonation calls, protect your account and OTP codes.
  • Taking and keeping memoriesTake, review and send photos; clear memory when the phone says it's full.
  • Flying with your phoneOpen the electronic boarding pass, take a screenshot in case you lose signal, call whoever is picking you up after landing.
  • Review and Q&ARedo the main steps yourself; take home a large-print guide sheet.

Three reflexes against scams

Instead of listing types of scams (new ones appear every month), the class practices three reflexes that work against any type. All practice scenarios are staged examples, clearly labeled as illustrations.

  1. 1Stop when someone calls or messages with urgent news: a relative in trouble, an account locked, a prize won, "authorities" asking you to do something by phone.
  2. 2Never read out or send OTP codes, passwords or photos of ID documents to anyone by phone or message.
  3. 3Call back to verify using the number of your relative you already saved, before transferring money or clicking any link.

How the class is run

  • Learn on your own phone. Each phone model has a different interface; learning on a demo device means you can't repeat it at home.
  • Learners tap for themselves. The instructor shows how and doesn't take the phone to do it for them, because the goal is being able to do it at home.
  • No touching passwords or OTPs. Instructors don't ask for, view or store learners' account information.
  • Small groups so everyone can ask, and ask again as many times as they like.
  • A large-print guide sheet to take home after each session.
  • Invite children and grandchildren to the first and last sessions, so they can remind each other at home.

For children and grandchildren: what to prepare before the class?

  • Fully charge the phone and check that it has free storage.
  • Save relatives in the contacts under easy-to-recognize names: "Son Hung", "Granddaughter Lan".
  • Let the grandparents remember or keep their own unlock password.
  • Pre-install the messaging app the family uses.
  • Bring reading glasses if the grandparents use them.

Chapter 04

Hanging book garden and free book lending

In 2015, before the company existed, Khoa Nguyễn was coordinator of the Free Book Lending project, a way for books sitting idle on one home's shelf to reach readers in another home. In the same year he initiated the "Tôi tốt – ikinds" series of projects, with a line he still often repeats.

In late 2016, that idea went out to the schoolyard. The Green Club of the Faculty of Environment, University of Science, Ho Chi Minh City worked with Học viện Sẻ chia to hold the "Hanging Book Garden" festival: dozens of books hung under a flower trellis, and anyone passing by could stop to read and borrow them.

The project's longer-term goal is a lending model among readers themselves, so everyone knows whose home has the book they need, and borrows and returns with a sense of responsibility. Among the articles we have been able to find again, this is the first time the name Học viện Sẻ chia was mentioned in the press.

Free digital tools

The form of sharing closest to a technology company's trade: build good tools and open them to everyone. Use them right in the browser, no installation needed.

Every tool that lets users create their own content has a filter blocking gambling, betting, vice and incitement against the state, with a mechanism for reporting violations.

Chapter 07

Transparency principles

Charity needs planning and proper organization. I hold the funds myself, so everything has to be transparent, clear and continuously updated.

Khoa Nguyễn answering Thanh Niên, May 26, 2021

  1. No selling in community activities. Classes don't promote products or collect customers.
  2. No using learners' information for business. Class lists and phone numbers of the older learners are used only to announce schedules.
  3. Photos are published only with the consent of the people in them. When no permitted photo is available, we use an illustration and label it clearly as an illustration.
  4. Every contribution is recorded and reported back to the person who gave it: money, books, venue or equipment.
  5. No figures without records. How many people have studied, how many books have circulated: published only when there are books of account.

The HVSC community project fund

The spirit of giving, without needing the HVSC name

FAQ

01Where do HVSC's technology classes for seniors take place, and are they free?

02My grandparents want to join the Seniors' Internet Group. What should they do?

03What do learners need to bring to class?

04Does the instructor take the phone and do the steps for me?

05I'm not good with technology. Can I still be a volunteer?

06Are the community activities related to HVSC's business?

07Do HVSC staff have to take part in community activities under the HVSC name?

Không. HVSC khuyến khích nhân viên tham gia hoạt động xã hội và tự tổ chức dự án cộng đồng độc lập, không cần nhắc tới HVSC. Công ty hỗ trợ công cụ, nền tảng và sắp xếp ngày công để nhân viên tham gia, kể cả hoạt động do tổ chức bên ngoài thực hiện.

08If a business wants to sponsor, how is the contribution recorded?

09Why doesn't this page state the number of people taught or books given?

10Has the press reported on these activities?
